About Us and our AlpacasCrimpy Critters Alpaca Farm is located on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. Gabriola Island is a short 20 minute ferry ride away from Nanaimo, which is the central City on Vancouver Island, BC. Gabriola Island is a diverse community of approximately 5000 people, who enjoy a unique relaxed lifestyle. Our island offers picturesque landscapes with an abundance of natural outdoor beauty, hiking, boating, swimming, wildlife viewing, and unique artistic offerings. Our island also offers many conveniences, such as a full service grocery store, liquor store, pharmacy, library, gas station, restaurants, art galleries and gift shops. At Crimpy Critters Alpaca Farm, we've been raising our animals since 2001. We maintain a small herd of approximately 30 animals, and our alpacas get individual attention to socialize them and encourage an easy temperment. We care about each of our individual alpacas, and treat them with the utmost respect that all animals deserve. Our animals are Canadian Registered and consist of Peruvian/Chilean crosses in a nice variety of colours. We strive to breed for quality alpacas with sound conformation, dense fleeces, full fiber coverage, and very importantly, sweet personalities. Some of the things we enjoy most about our animals include their curiosity, playfulness and inquisitiveness. Of course, just gazing at their beauty, listening to their soft humming sounds, and watching them interact with each other is most enjoyable too. Some of the main benefits of owning alpacas include: Alpacas are raised for their alpaca fiber and not for meat. The animal is not harmed when it is sheared yearly for its luxurious fibre. Personally, Jim and I have a sense of comfort knowing that we do not have to kill our animals to obtain the source of income they provide. Alpacas are environmentally friendly Alpacas' feet have soft pads under the toe nails so the pasture is not chewed up. As well, alpacas have "community dung piles", keeping pastures reasonably free of parasites and easily cleaned. We offer our alpaca manure for sale to our neighbours because it makes excellent fertilizer for the garden. Alpacas are an easy-care alternative livestock, and ideal for small acreages Depending on the layout of your property, you can comfortably fit between 5 to 10 alpacas per acre. Most alpacas get along well with other animals, and they are remarkably resilient against diseases. It takes Jim and I about an hour a day to care for our herd of 30 animals. Alpacas make great pets Alpacas are gentle animals, and good with children. Alpacas can be trained to be led with a halter and lead rope, and can make excellent 4-H project animals. Jim and I enjoy walking a couple of our alpacas through the forest, down to the beach, and around the roads of our neighbourhood. Our neighbours love our alpacas! Alpacas offer an alternative country lifestyle Raising alpacas can involve your whole family in a meaningful and healthy lifestyle. You are rewarded with tranquility and relaxation through the alpacas' gentle and calm nature, and also by observing their social behaviour which can be so amusing. Of course, touching the alpacas' soft and silky fibre is a joy in itself ...there's nothing quite so soft and lavish! Our Alpaca Information Brochure offers further general information about alpacas. Whether you are looking for a rewarding pass time for the whole family to enjoy, or if you are looking for some extra income in your retirement, alpacas could be what you are looking for. Visitors who are interested in learning more about alpacas are always welcome at Crimpy Critters Alpaca Farm. Please give us a call or an e-mail and we'll put the coffee on, answer your questions, and show you around our farm and our animals. Our alpacas love showing off for visitors, and we will enjoy your company as well. Go to the top of this page |
